Cry of Desperation
It started off as a beautiful spring morning; and from an altitude of 3500 feet, the view was spectacular. You could see for forty miles in any direction. My flying buddy and myself were enroute to Nashville, Tennessee and we had just been given permission to change radio frequencies from Fort Campbell Control to a UNICOMM frequency, when the next thing that happened, I’ll remember for the rest of my life.
A voice came over the radio with a cry of urgency. HELP! SOMEBODY HELP ME! I’M LOST AND LOW ON FUEL! A fellow pilot was in dire need. Fort Campbell Control responded to the lost aviator.
The Controller asked him, “Where do you think you are?” He replied, “I think I’m over Ashland City, Tn. at 3500 feet.” I turned and looked at my friend and said, “That’s exactly where we are and that’s our exact altitude.”
We were now concerned because of the possibility of a mid air collision. So we started looking around trying to locate the lost aircraft. Fort Campbell Radar reported two contacts over Ashland City, and one of them was our plane. Fort Campbell Control asked if we had visual contact with the plane.
I replied, “No visual contact.” But we certainly heard him! Fort Campbell was able to direct him to the nearest airport; just 7 miles away where he was able to refuel and I’m sure collect his thoughts.
I think back to that day quite often. I am thankful that Fort Campbell Control was there for the lost pilot in his time of need, when he cried out for help. It reminds me, of the day I cried out for salvation and I’m thankful Jesus was there waiting for me in my time of need.
You know the people of this world are crying out in desperation today too and I wonder, is anyone really listening, and does anyone really care? Do we have visual contact with those crying out, or are we even listening?
We sometimes tend to mind our own business and tend to keep with people who are like us. Think about that for a second, did not Jesus go down and eat with the sinners? Did he not go and present the good news of the Gospel to them?
Are we really concerned enough about our fellow mankind that we are willing to go to them and tell them God loves them? After all was it not God who created all mankind? We as Christians have one thing in common and that is a calling to belong to Jesus Christ. We are the body of Christ and we should reflect Christ in whose image we were created.
Are we really responding to Jesus call to COME FOLLOW ME? Ask your self this, is that a request or a command. I think if you have accepted the Lord then it is a command. Our risen Lord and Savior Jesus Christ commanded us, the Church, to go and make disciples of people everywhere.
Do we as Christians really understand what the Bible says in Matthew 28:19-20, “Go you therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
That is a command and not a request. But for many Christians, myself included, sharing our faith with our friends and colleagues can be very difficult sometimes. You know we are not perfect but we can help people to feel accepted, and we can inspire and support them and we can also share the Gospel even in these simple ways.
Matthew 25:35-40, “For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’
Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ Then the King will answer and say to them, Truly I say unto you, if you have done it unto the least of these my brethren you have done it unto Me.”
I hope you thought about the simplicity of those words in these verses and took them literally, and I hope you searched them out for even a deeper meaning also. You know one of my favorite old sayings is, people don’t care how much you know until they see how much you care! No! I don’t remember where I heard that but it is so true today in our lives. If we will just be genuine and real with people and don’t try to be something we are not.
When we are all together do we really feel the Lords presence among us? Matthew 18:20, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Do we understand that we are the churches witness at it best? Think about this, because of Christ all our individual differences can be overcome. In order to carry out the great commission of taking the Gospel to the lost, the ones crying out in desperation.
If it is a command for us to come follow Him and we feel the Saviors presence in our lives, why then do we sometimes seem afraid to tell others about Jesus or demonstrate true Christian love by helping someone out?
Could it be that once a week Sunday services cannot compete with the influences society has to offer today? Maybe what we need to make Godly training part of our everyday life. We can also learn from other brothers and sister in Christ, and we do not need to underestimate and disregard their importance as to their gifts, ideas and what that they have to offer in furthering the Gospel of Christ.
So have you ever wondered what can you do to make a difference? Romans 12:1-2, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” WOW! There is another command and not a request!
This is one of my favorite stories in the Bible, Matthew 14 where Jesus and Peter walked on the water. I’m quite sure you all are familiar with it. Some people will read it and say well Peter lost his faith, what a pathetic response. I think Peter did pretty good, on the basis of this record. Matthew 14:29, And He said, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
Think about that! Peter actually walked on water. Now Jesus said, Come. So what did Peter need to do? Peter needed to Go! Peter listened to Christ command to COME. Are you listening today? Is Jesus calling you to Come Follow Me? And do you need to go? Peter got out of the boat, eleven others stayed in the boat or should I say their comfort zone.
Let me ask you a Question: Are we only living for today or are we giving ourselves to others, teaching and training them, to carry the Gospel of Christ to the next generation?
Isaiah 55:11, “So shall my word be, that goes forth from my mouth; it shall not return to me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I have sent it.”
That’s a promise from God The world needs to hear the Gospel of Christ. Our lives maybe the only Bible someone will ever read. And as disciples, and we are disciples, we are not called to be successful, but to be faithful.
I offer you this challenge today: If the will of God’s has been established in your life, the next thing you must do, is to act on it. Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”
What is the Holy Spirit nudging you to do something about today in the world, your church, your work, or your community or yourself? Commit your life to Christ. Not because I asked you to, not because someone else thinks you should.
But! because Jesus laid down his life for you, and took that commitment to the cross. God has a real and wonderful plan for your life. He does not have a plan B, because His plan is you! The people of this world are crying out in desperation today, HELP! SOMEBODY HELP ME! I’M LOST AND LOW ON FUEL!, and I wonder, are we really listening, and do we really care?
